How AMZ Consulting Turned
25 Years of Australian Exploration Data
into a Board‑Ready Decision Tool

Introduction

Client Challenge:

A leading resource sector client struggled to make sense of over two decades of exploration data. The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Mineral & Petroleum Exploration, Australia dataset (Cat. No. 8412.0) contained rich insights from March 2000 to December 2024, but the information was in static reports and spreadsheets. The client needed a way to easily visualize trends, compare actual vs expected exploration spending, and drill into details.

AMZ Consulting’s Solution:

AMZ Consulting developed a comprehensive Power BI dashboard that transformed the raw ABS data into an interactive analytical tool. This dashboard is divided into four key pages – Overview, Mineral by Commodity, Petroleum (Onshore vs Offshore), and State/Territory Breakdown – each addressing a critical aspect of the data.

Results:

The Power BI solution enabled faster decision-making, as analysts could now instantly retrieve historical trends (instead of manually combing through yearly reports). It uncovered key insights such as a slight overall overspend in exploration (~3.5% above plan), a shift of petroleum investments toward offshore projects, and region-specific exploration booms. These findings guided the client in optimizing CAPEX (Capital expenditure) allocation – for example, prioritizing successful exploration regions and adjusting onshore/offshore budget splits.

The interactive nature of the dashboard also improved investor engagement: the client’s stakeholders could easily visualize the long-term exploration story, increasing their confidence in the company’s strategy.

Below is the live embedded Power BI report demonstrating the solution in action:

(Interactive dashboard: Use the filters and selectors in the embedded report to explore the data.) Data Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics, Mineral & Petroleum Exploration, Australia (Cat. No. 8412.0), March 2000 – December 2024.

Exploration Expenditure Overview

The first page of the dashboard provides a high-level overview of exploration expenditure from FY2000 through FY2025. It aggregates data across all minerals and petroleum exploration, highlighting total spend and how actual expenditures compared to what was expected or budgeted. Key summary metrics are displayed, along with charts for trend analysis and drilling activity. This page answers questions like: How much was invested in exploration over 25 years? Did we overshoot or undershoot our budgets? How do mineral and petroleum exploration compare?

Mineral Exploration Expenditure by Mineral Type

The second page of the report allows users to drill down into the mineral exploration data by specific commodity. It includes interactive filters for mineral types and detailed visuals breaking out the exploration expenditures and outcomes for each category. By selecting a particular mineral (or viewing all at once), the client can examine how exploration spending for that commodity has trended over time and what results it yielded in terms of deposit discoveries.

Onshore vs Offshore Petroleum Exploration Expenditure & Lease

The third page focuses on the petroleum exploration sector, breaking it down by onshore vs. offshore activities and by the type of petroleum leases. This section of the dashboard helps the client understand how their oil and gas exploration strategy evolved over 25 years, especially in balancing onshore projects (e.g. inland conventional or shale exploration) versus offshore projects (e.g. offshore basins and shelf exploration). It also examines whether exploration funds were used in areas already under production leases or in entirely new exploratory leases.

Exploration Expenditure by State and Territory

The fourth page of the dashboard provides a geographical breakdown of exploration activity, spanning all of Australia’s states and territories. This section is crucial for understanding where (in which regions) exploration dollars were spent and where the most significant mineral and petroleum finds might be occurring. It combines map visuals and trend charts to compare regions side by side.

Impact of the Dashboard

The implementation of the 25-year exploration dashboard had a substantial impact on the client’s operations and strategy:

Faster, Data-Driven Decision Making:

What used to take analysts days or weeks of compiling spreadsheets now happens in moments. With the dashboard, the client’s team can instantly pull up trends, compare scenarios (e.g. “What if we exclude gold – how does the trend look?”), and answer management’s questions on the fly. Meetings that previously relied on static reports transformed into interactive sessions where decision-makers could ask new questions and see the answers in real-time. This agility in analysis has accelerated decision-making, particularly for annual planning and review of exploration programs.

Optimized CAPEX Allocation:

In essence, the company can now prioritize investments with better confidence – funnelling CAPEX to commodities and regions that show promise (or are underinvested relative to potential) and pulling back from areas with diminishing returns. Over the long term, this optimizes their exploration ROI and ensures capital is used more efficiently.

Enhanced Investor Engagement and Transparency:

The client has leveraged the Power BI visuals to engage investors and stakeholders. During investor meetings and annual reports, they can present interactive slides from the dashboard to tell the story of the company’s exploration track record. This level of transparency and insight has increased investor confidence. Investors appreciate that the company has a firm grasp on historical data and uses it to guide future strategy. Some investors have even been given limited access to a version of the dashboard, allowing them to explore the data themselves, which was a very innovative way to build trust.

Cross-Departmental Alignment:

The unified dashboard became a “single source of truth” for multiple departments – exploration, finance, strategy, and even external affairs. Everyone now references the same figures for historical exploration (eliminating discrepancies that often arose from different data sources). This has improved alignment; for example, the exploration team and finance team can jointly review how actual spend tracked to budget each year and adjust forecasts together. The visualization of data also helped non-technical team members grasp trends quickly, fostering more informed discussions across the organization.

In summary, the Power BI dashboard not only provided insights but also changed the way the client operates – enabling a more proactive and informed approach to managing exploration efforts and communicating their value to stakeholders.
